The complete list: Pitchfork's Top 500 songs of the 2000s

Musician tweet of the week: Courtney Love

Lots of drama happening on Courtney Love's Twitter page this week. It was reported that on the new Guitar Hero game, you can choose Kurt Cobain as your character, and using that character you can sing anything, from Bon Jovi to 3 Doors Down.

When Courtney heard about this, she flipped out, claiming she hadn't approved Kurt's likeness to be used to sing other band's songs. The CEO of Guitar Hero shot back, saying he had a signed contract, and, "The check has been cashed."

Courtney continued to deny this:

activision say we cashed a check, but i'd like to know who they wrote a check to? we didn't see a dime.

She then went on to bash Dave Grohl, Cobain's bandmate in Nirvana, who had also spoken out against allowing Cobain's character to be used:

DAVE GROHL IS A LEGENDARY COKEHEAD AND I HAVE BEEN SOBER FOR SIX YEARS. it breaks my heart that pat smear hangs out with that assclown.

Welcome to the charts, Cobra Starship

I was thrilled to see Cobra Starship break into the top 10 this year with "Good Girls Go Bad." I first heard Cobra Starship a few years back, and from that moment I've been surprised at their lack of mainstream success. To me, their songs have always been much more catchy and fun than those of similar bands like Fall Out Boy, Panic at the Disco, etc. How can you not love a band with song titles like "Pete Wentz is the Only Reason We're Famous"?

It took hooking up with a Gossip Girl, Leighton Meester, for Cobra Starship to finally dent the charts. And now there's no going back.

Hopefully the bandwagon jumpers will dig back into the band's catalog and seek out some of their other good songs. Like...

Video: "Snakes On a Plane" Yes, they sang the theme song on this cult classic.

Video: "Guilty Pleasure" A song title that describes the band perfectly.

Video: "The City is at War" Another synth-pop gem.

Video: "Kiss My Sass" Frontman Gabe Saporta brings sassy back, with help from Travis McCoy of Gym Class Heroes.

COBRA STARSHIP - Kiss My Sass

Video: "Smile for Paparazzi"
A little Latin-flavored number in which Cobra sing about the paparazzi, long before Lady Gaga ever thought to do so.

Video: "Prostitution is the World's Oldest Profession (And I, Dear Madame, Am A Professional)" Just silly. "You can hate me after you pay me!"

Musician tweet of the week: P!nk

The big news this week was Kanye West interrupting Taylor Swift's acceptance speech at the VMAs, which had artists everywhere flipping out.

Everyone from Katy Perry to Jordin Sparks tweeted their disapproval, but the best came from P!nk, who kept it short and sweet:

Kanye west is the biggest piece of shit on earth. Quote me.

The best thing about this incident is that it has inspired the awesome new website immaletyoufinish.

Musician tweet of the week: Billy Ray Cyrus & Ingrid Michaelson

What do the following two tweets have in common?

Billy Ray Cyrus:
You can't loose something you don't have

Ingrid Michaelson:
"i like mcdonalds and lose women"-quote from a brit making fun of us americans.

Incorrect word usage! I'm not a grammar nazi, but I love Twitter because it allows us to see which celebrities can actually spell and form proper sentences. I never thought that "lose" and "loose" were that difficult to tell apart, but apparently they are.

Way to go Billy Ray & Ingrid, partners in illiteracy!

Black Eyed Peas & Tim McGraw kickoff the NFL season

CONCERT REVIEW: Black Eyed Peas & Tim McGraw
Point State Park, Pittsburgh

September 10, 2009

The NFL's free kickoff concert was held in Pittsburgh tonight, with the Black Eyed Peas and Tim McGraw showing why each is a master of their respective genre.

Generally I'm not impressed with hip hop concerts, because they usually spend too much time screaming, "Throw your hands in the air!" and not enough time actually delivering a satisfying performance. Either that, or they lip synch.

But the Peas, who have dominated the Billboard singles chart this summer like no other artist, put on a terrific show. They rocked the house with their dance hits like "I Gotta Feeling" and "My Humps."

Fergie was especially impressive on "Big Girls Don't Cry." Her singing was strong and flawless - it's been a long time since I witnessed such a remarkable vocal performance on a song.

McGraw was almost as good. No other country artist has as many hits in the last 15 years, and he played many of the best, opening with "I Like it, I Love it," before moving into the underrated "Where the Green Grass Grows," the barnburner "Something Like That," and the inspirational ballad "Live Like You Were Dying."

Both artists played hour-long sets, then returned for two more songs at 8 pm for the portion of the concert that was televised on NBC. McGraw came out into the audience for his closing number, the title track from his new album Southern Voice. That was followed by a fireworks display.

Musician tweet of the week: Tegan and Sara

Last night Tegan and Sara posted a serious of tweets about their unruly neighbors:

The people upstairs r having a rave. Swear to god. Its 230am on a Thursday. Its so loud if u were here I'd have to shout for you to hear me.

Then later:
Hope the police come and arrest all the people there. And they get evicted. AND that the music playing is never heard on the earth again.

Then later:
OMG. they are listening to tiesto and t&s now. hilarious. okay. fine. im not mad anymore. now im just embarrassed. go to bed you crazy kids.

Don't you love a happy ending?

Sainthood, Tegan and Sara's sixth studio album, will be released on October 27, and it's one of the most-anticipated records of the year (at least in these parts.) I can't wait to hear it!

Anti-Flag to perform in Pittsburgh during G-20 summit

Pittsburgh's Anti-Flag have always had an anarchist streak, and now it's showing up again - they've hastily planned a September 24 show at Club Zoo, sarcastically dubbed the "G-20 Welcoming Party."

The G-20, a summit of world leaders, will be taking place in Pittsburgh on September 24-25 at the David Lawrence Convention Center. Anti-Flag have scheduled this show for Club Zoo in the Strip District, within walking distance of the convention center. Hmmm, might some of Anti-Flag's punk fans cause some trouble that night? We can only wait and see...

State Radio will be opening. Tickets go on sale tomorrow at noon. Find the band at www.anti-flag.com.

September Pittsburgh concerts

MUST-SEE SHOW:
9/12 Ra Ra Riot @ WYEP Rock the Block, 12th Street

We recently caught these guys at the All Points West festival, where they delivered a satisfying live show featuring their trademark blend of indie rock, cello, and violin. Expect to hear several tracks from The Rhumb Line, their acclaimed album that's now a year old, and possibly some new stuff as well.

ALSO WORTH ATTENDING:
9/10 Black Eyed Peas & Tim McGraw @ Point State Park

Sometimes our city struggles to get bigtime concerts, but we can thank our Stillers for this one. The NFL is bringing in these two superstars for a free show before the Steelers open the football season. These two acts might not be the most-played on your iPod, but how can you pass up a chance to see them for free with thousands of other fans on opening night of the NFL season?

9/11 Snoop Dogg @ Mr. Small's
Yet another show we can thank the Stillers for! Word is that Snoop wanted to come to town to see the Steelers' opening night game, so he scheduled this performance for the night after. And at such an intimate venue! You never thought you'd get to see Snoop this close... but you're going to have to shell out $50 to do it.

9/24 The Academy Is..., Set Your Goals & Mayday Parade @ Altar Bar
Now that Cobra Starship, Panic! at the Disco and Gym Class Heroes have all scored huge pop hits, that leaves The Academy Is... as the only members of the Fall Out Boy posse who've yet to break through in a major way. Get ahead of the curve and check them out now, before they're too big for you.

Others to keep in mind:
9/1 Hatebreed @ Mr. Small's
9/3 Helado Negro @ Garfield Artworks
9/5 Tea Leaf Green @ Mr. Small's
9/6 Rusted Root @ Hartwood Acres
9/6 Mission of Burma @ Club Cafe
9/6 Grand Funk Railroad @ Heinz Field
9/8 Gaslight Anthem @ Mr. Small's
9/8 Deer Tick @ Club Cafe
9/12 Alice Peacock @ Club Cafe
9/12 Adrian Belew @ Rex Theatre
9/12 Punchline @ Mr. Small's
9/16 The Minus 5 @ Club Cafe
9/22 Dear and the Headlights @ Rex Theatre
9/23 Lamb of God & Gwar @ Amphitheatre at Station Square
9/23 Weakerthans @ Rex Theatre
9/26 Foreigner @ PNC Park
9/27 Lacuna Coil @ Club Zoo
